david petraeus resigning from the cia. that's certainly not the first sex scandal to bring down someone in washington, it certainly won't be the last. but tonight there are growing questions about the timing of how the word got out, whether more people in the government should have been told or been told sooner that the fbi was investigating a case involving the director of the cia. we're keeping them honest as we do every night not to take sides, you can get that on other cable news channels, but to look for the truth, the facts. here's what we know right now about who knew what and when. according to "wall street journal" the fbi discovered the affair between petraeus and his biographer, paula broadwell, in late summer. we'll have more on how in just a moment. so the fbi reportedly knew in late summer that the head of the cia was having an affair, but it wasn't until months later after election day that president obama found out, and the house and senate intelligence committees didn't find out until friday. congressional leaders from both parties are angry, they say they shoul

-mails, a couple of which mention david petraeus, but they're not threatening to her, nor are they accusing anyone of having an affair. so she has these annoying e-mails but they mention things that are personal information about her that she finds disturbing so she goes to an fbi agent she knows and she says can i get this investigated. and that agent brings her into the tampa field office and the tampa field office has a cybersquad that does criminal work, and they look at it and say well, gee, there's no threat here and the agent says well, can we investigate this for this person. they open the statute book and look up the harassment part of the statute and say all right, we have a basis to open a case here. first let's find out who is on the other end of these e-mails. then over time, they're able to identify it's paula broadwell. then they figure out who paula broadwell is and at that point, the case, the aperture of the case starts to open because they say well, what's this e-mail account, what's this other e-mail account that's talking to it, let's subpoena the rest of the e

investigation of david petraeus are getting ready to meet. that's this afternoon. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly how in just a moment. the defense department's inspector general is going through e-mails allen and kelley sent to each other. >> the primary thing is that, you know, she wants her privacy protected. and i think that she's going to probably come out at some point and make a statement. >> privacy, of course, for all players involved
